With John's death, England becomes its own entity, cut off from Normandy and the continent and begins a new history altogether. Comprehensive.
I have read many histories of feudal England, and most turn out to be very similar to each other. This book was different, in that it knowledgeably and carefully tracked the political events of the reigns from William I through John, and connected them thoughtfully to the origins and development of the various documents and elements of the British Constitution, and showed how those events affected future events. Although the book was detailed in the extreme, it was incredibly informative, putting many well-known episodes in a new perspective. If one has the interest in early British history and constitutional development, and patience for a very thorough explanation, this is a worthwhile and very enjoyable read.
I've enjoyed history my entire life. This book has added to my knowledge. I enjoyed it immensely. In the last few months l've addressed books on English history, and have found this one to meet my needs.
As an avid reader of ancient history of Great Britian, this book does not disappoint. The author weaves a well written and detailed narrative of two middle age centuries while interpreting documented sources - surviving historical documents, monks' accounts,and other 'historians' of that time, etc. I highly recommend it for history buffs wanting to understand further the feudalism of that time and how it benefitted the powerful royal families ruling England.
The author may be a scholar but was a very poor writer. First time I ever encountered someone who could make October of 1066 seem so droll and mundane. Dreadful piece of historical writing.
This Book was really good for me being a Genealogist; there was heaps directly relating to my ancestors but in addition to what appealed to me was the vast resources it drew on covering the habits and movements of William Duke of Normandy and not just his family but his many barons he set up after the conquest. There were anecdotes of great interest such as 'Curthose' (shorty-pants); thought to be where the term originated. The author made good use of debating the adverse views and intentions of the King and his barons and he made a point of defining just how different the Continental Clergy was from the Clergy of England. Well done.., because I don't think it is too well understood, even in the church today, what caught Duke William's attention and made him reform the church in England
